Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok: the 2am start at Sanam Luang, as a spectator and run-cation weekend

Every 2026 entry has sold out, but the race weekend still has a strong shape: a half marathon from MBK Center before dawn on Saturday, a full marathon leaving Sanam Luang at 2am on Sunday and returning there, and a hotel choice shaped by starts that happen while most of Bangkok is asleep.

What you need to know, in short: The Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok runs across Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November 2026, and every entry has sold out. The half marathon starts at MBK Center at 4am on Saturday. The full marathon starts and finishes at Sanam Luang on a new loop course, leaving at 2am on Sunday, followed by the 10K at 6am and the 4.5K family run at 6.45am. That makes 2026 a spectator, supporter and planning year, with the finish at Sanam Luang as the weekend's anchor. Our calendar record is Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok 2026.

Two mornings, two start lines

The weekend is easy to misread as one race at one place. It is really two early mornings built around two starts. On Saturday 28 November, the 21.1K half marathon leaves MBK Center on Phaya Thai Road at 4am and finishes at Sanam Luang. On Sunday 29 November, Sanam Luang takes over: the 42.195K marathon starts there at 2am, the 10K at 6am and the 4.5K family run at 6.45am. All four races finish at Sanam Luang, beside the Grand Palace, so supporters following different distances can plan around one finish line even when their runner starts across the city.

This is the ninth edition. The Thai government announcement presents it as the official World Capital City Marathon, certified by World Athletics, and expects more than 100,000 runners and visitors across the weekend. The scale is not new: more than 48,000 people took part across all distances in 2025.

The 2am loop

The full marathon's change of shape is the story for returning runners. Earlier editions ran from MBK toward Sanam Luang. In 2026 the marathon starts at Sanam Luang, makes a full city loop and comes back to the same royal square. MBK is still on the course, but as the 31 km point rather than the start. The route takes in Democracy Monument, the Rama VIII Bridge, Victory Monument, Lumpini Park, Wat Saket and the Giant Swing before the Grand Palace closes the loop.

The 2am start is the practical answer to Bangkok heat and humidity, but it changes the spectator experience too. The first runners move through a dark, closed city; much of the field returns as the old town is waking. If you watch one thing, watch the finish. It gives you the elite race, the sunrise and the long tail of runners completing the loop in one place.

Sold out changes the trip, not the point

Thailand Tri-League's official registration page now marks every public and elite category sold out, from the marathon to the family run, and states that all slots have gone. There is no useful purpose in building a weekend around a hoped-for late entry. Treat unofficial bib offers with caution, and check only the organiser's channels for any change.

For supporters, the value of the weekend is still obvious. You get the atmosphere of a world-class city marathon without asking the person you came with to solve a 2am start alone. For runners who missed out, the trip can become a reconnaissance: learn where the starts sit, how far your hotel is from the finish, what the city feels like at the hours the race uses, and whether this is the marathon you want to enter next year.

How to watch without chasing the race

Pick a role and a place. At Sanam Luang you can see the marathon start at 2am or settle in later for finishes across the morning. For the half marathon, choose either the MBK start on Saturday or the Sanam Luang finish; trying to improvise between the two at 4am is a poor plan unless your transport is arranged. The loop passes famous sights, but a road race is not a parade route with guaranteed access at every landmark. Road closures, barriers and spectator arrangements can change the view, so check the organiser's final notices before choosing a corner.

Do not try to follow one runner around the full course. Closed roads and thin night transport make that a race of your own. One start or finish moment, one landmark if it is close to your base, and a clear meeting point after the finish will serve most supporters better.

Where to stay is the strategy

For the full marathon, the strongest base is Rattanakosin, Banglamphu or the Khao San side of the old town, within walking distance of Sanam Luang. A short walk removes the hardest transport problem of the weekend and puts the finish beside your hotel. For the half marathon, Pathum Wan and Siam make sense for the MBK start, but remember that the runner finishes in the old town; supporters who want the finish should either stay there or plan the cross-city move properly.

A BTS or MRT base elsewhere in Bangkok is workable for a normal sightseeing weekend, but less useful at 2am or 4am. Book for the race hours first and the sightseeing map second. Start with our Bangkok hotels guide, then use the event's Bangkok hotel search on Trip.com (affiliate link). The right question is not simply which district is best in Bangkok. It is which bed lets your runner reach the start calmly and lets you both get back after the finish.

A run-cation shape for the weekend

Arrive by Friday if you can, and keep the day loose: settle into the neighbourhood, eat early and protect sleep. Saturday belongs first to the half marathon, then to a slow old town morning and a quiet afternoon. Sunday starts in darkness for marathon supporters, opens out into the 10K and family run, and should leave room for a long breakfast and a nap rather than a packed sightseeing list. Stay through Monday if the trip allows. Bangkok is easier to enjoy once the race kit is packed away, and a spare day turns a logistical weekend into a city break.

For next year's start line

The practical lesson of 2026 is timing. Entries opened in July and the field filled long before race weekend. If this is on your list for next year, watch the official registration page from early summer and be ready when entries open; do not wait for autumn. A spectator trip this year is a good way to choose your distance and your base with evidence rather than hope.
