Thailand with children

One of the great family trips.

Warm seas, night markets that double as dinner and entertainment, trains and boats that are adventures in themselves, and a culture that genuinely likes children. Thailand with a family is easy in the ways that matter.

What works, by kind of event

Illuminations and lantern nights are the perfect family evening: outdoors, spectacular at child height, and early enough to end before bedtime. Temple fairs and night markets feed everyone differently from ten stalls in one evening, which solves the picky-eater problem completely. Songkran in April is the world's greatest water fight: with small children, watch from a side street or join a hotel or mall celebration rather than the main battlegrounds. Beach and island days carry the middle of most trips: pick the coast by season (the Gulf islands are driest roughly February to August, the Andaman roughly November to April).

The logistics that help

Convenience stores (7-Eleven above all) are on every corner with milk, snacks, nappies and suncream at all hours. Intercity travel is easiest by domestic flight for long legs; the overnight sleeper train to Chiang Mai is a genuine adventure for older children, booked ahead. In Bangkok the BTS and MRT beat traffic with a stroller, and the river boats turn transport into sightseeing. Heat is the real planning constraint: sightsee early, rest or swim through the middle of the day, and go out again for the evening markets.

The favourites that need booking

The days out below book up in season or reward an early start; each card explains how that attraction is really booked.

The Ancient City (Muang Boran)

A vast open-air park south of Bangkok holding scale replicas of Thailand's great monuments in a map-shaped garden: the whole country's architecture in one long day, by bike or golf cart.

How to book: Tickets at the gate or online. Rent the bike or golf cart inside; it is too big to walk.

King Power Mahanakhon SkyWalk

Thailand's highest observation deck, with a glass floor section over the city at 310 metres. The pixelated tower is a landmark before you even go up.

How to book: Timed tickets online or at the tower. Sunset slots sell first; the glass floor closes in high wind.

An ethical elephant sanctuary day

The Mae Sa and Mae Taeng valleys hold Thailand's best-known sanctuaries: feeding, walking alongside and river bathing with elephants, at no-riding programmes that put the animals first.

How to book: Book direct with the sanctuary or on the platforms, and choose a named no-riding programme. Pick-up from Chiang Mai is usually included.

Hong Island and the 360 viewpoint

The Hong lagoon entered through a gap in the cliffs, a white sand bay, and a viewpoint platform over the whole archipelago.

How to book: Longtail and speedboat tours daily; park fees on top.

Ayutthaya as a day trip

The old capital's brick prangs and Buddha heads in banyan roots, an hour north. By van, by train with a local guide, or up by bus and back down the river by boat: the classic Bangkok day out.

How to book: Day trips run daily from Bangkok on the platforms and through hotels; the train-plus-tuk-tuk version is easy to do independently.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

The golden temple on the mountain above the city, up 306 naga steps, with Chiang Mai spread out below. Every Chiang Mai trip makes this pilgrimage once.

How to book: Songthaews leave from the old city and the zoo through the day; entry paid at the temple. Go early or at dusk to miss the midday groups.
