Where to stay

Stay where the event is.

The stay shapes the trip. Where you stay decides how far you walk (or ride) to the event or attractions, what you see on the way and how easily you get home through the crowds. So find what you are planning to do and let it set your dates, decide which area you want to be in before you look at hotels, and book early. On festival weekends, Songkran above all, the whole country travels and the well-placed rooms go first.

How booking around events works here

Thailand's big travel windows are predictable: Songkran in mid April, Loy Krathong in November, the New Year countdowns and Chinese New Year fill the famous places weeks out, while the green season (roughly May to October) is when the same hotels discount. Island stays add a ferry timetable to the plan: the last boat sets your arrival day more firmly than any flight.

In Bangkok, stay near a BTS or MRT station and the city's distances stop mattering. In the north and the islands, the choice is between the old town or beach strip, with everything on foot, and a quieter base that costs you a ride each way. Decide by the evenings: festivals are night events, and the best base is the one you can walk home to.
