Sakon Nakhon Christmas Star Procession 2026: Tha Rae, the village of stars
Thailand’s largest Catholic community lights up Christmas in Isan. The star procession at Tha Rae is expected from 23 to 25 December 2026, with around 200 illuminated star floats, a cathedral at its heart and free entry. Here is the village, the tradition since 1982, and the shape the three days usually take.
What you need to know, in short: The Sakon Nakhon Christmas Star Procession is expected to run from Wednesday 23 to Friday 25 December 2026 at Tha Rae, a village beside Nong Han lake in Sakon Nakhon province, in Isan. Around 200 illuminated star floats take part, the festival centres on St Michael’s Cathedral, and entry is free. The dates are expected rather than confirmed, and the detailed 2026 schedule is published locally close to the event. Our calendar record is Sakon Nakhon Christmas Star Procession 2026.
Tha Rae, a Catholic village in Isan
Tha Rae, also written Ban Tha Rae, sits beside Nong Han lake in Mueang district of Sakon Nakhon province. It is Thailand’s largest Roman Catholic community, founded by Vietnamese Catholic families who settled there in the 1880s. That history sets the village apart in Isan, and it explains why Christmas, rather than a temple festival, is the biggest date in its year. For most of the year Tha Rae is a quiet lakeside village. In the week before Christmas, it fills with light.
Why stars
The community’s Christmas star procession tradition dates to 1982. The illuminated stars symbolise the Star of Bethlehem, the star that, in the Christmas story, guided the wise men to Bethlehem. Carried and paraded through the village, they turn a piece of the nativity story into a whole street of light. Around 200 illuminated star floats take part in the parade, which makes this a large procession by any measure, and a remarkable one for a village of this size.
The three days, as they usually run
Our calendar lists the 2026 dates as 23 to 25 December, with the status expected. What follows is the established shape of the festival, not a confirmed 2026 programme. On 23 December, the grand star procession takes place at the cathedral in Tha Rae, with the big illuminated floats. On Christmas Eve, 24 December, the pattern is a handheld star procession and Christmas Mass at the cathedral, a smaller and more devotional evening. On 25 December, a star procession moves through Sakon Nakhon city itself. If you can only be there for one day, 23 December in Tha Rae is the spectacle; Christmas Eve is the night that belongs most to the community itself.
A Signature Event
The Tourism Authority of Thailand has designated the Sakon Nakhon Christmas Star Parade a Signature Event, naming it in its 28 October 2026 product priorities alongside the Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival and the Nakhon Phanom Illuminated Boat Procession. That company matters: both of those are long established Isan festivals, and the star procession is now being presented in the same breath. It is a useful sign that this village celebration is being treated as one of the northeast’s defining events, not a local curiosity.
Getting there and being there
Tha Rae is about 21 km from Sakon Nakhon town, so most visitors base themselves in town and make the short trip out to the village, though staying close to Tha Rae puts you inside the festival rather than commuting to it. Sakon Nakhon has a domestic airport, which makes the province an easier addition to a December trip than its distance from Bangkok suggests. Entry is free. One piece of respect is worth stating plainly: the cathedral is a working church and Christmas Mass is worship, not a show, so visitors watch quietly and let the community lead its own celebration.
