Bangkok Design Week 2027: a first-timer's guide

The tenth Bangkok Design Week runs Thursday 18 to Sunday 28 February 2027, centred on Charoenkrung and Talat Noi under the theme DESIGN TO LAST. How the districts work, how to take the festival at the right pace, and what else fills the same February.

The short answer: Bangkok Design Week 2027 runs for eleven days, Thursday 18 to Sunday 28 February 2027, in creative districts across Bangkok, centred on Charoenkrung and Talat Noi by the river. It is the festival's tenth edition, organised by the Creative Economy Agency, under the theme DESIGN TO LAST. Most exhibitions and outdoor programmes are free, with some workshops and partner events ticketed. A first visit works best one district at a time, with mornings in the core riverside streets and no attempt to see the whole city programme in a day. Our record is Bangkok Design Week 2027.

What the festival is

Bangkok Design Week was first held in 2018 and has grown into a citywide festival rather than a fair in a hall. The Creative Economy Agency, which organises it, says the festival brings together more than 2,000 designers and creative businesses and draws more than 400,000 visitors a year, from Thailand and abroad. The programme mixes exhibitions, installations, talks, workshops, markets, performances and tours, placed inside galleries, shophouses, warehouses and public spaces in working neighbourhoods, so the city itself is a large part of what you have come to see.

The tenth edition's theme, DESIGN TO LAST, is worth taking literally as a guide to the programme. In the agency's framing, carried by Thailand NOW, the question is not how to design things that never change, but what makes a design able to keep changing without losing the value that made it worth keeping: a business that adapts, a city that responds to how people actually live, a product that evolves instead of becoming obsolete. Expect that argument, about durability, repair, reuse and local making, to run through the exhibitions you step into, including in districts where the buildings themselves are the oldest exhibit.

The districts

The centre of gravity is two adjoining riverside neighbourhoods on the east bank of the Chao Phraya. Charoenkrung, in Bang Rak district, is Bangkok's first modern road, a long street of shophouses, workshops, galleries and cafes running south from the old town towards Sathon, with the festival's activity threaded through its side sois. Talat Noi, in Samphanthawong district just to the north, is smaller and denser: lanes of metal workshops, shrines, old houses and street art around the river bend below Chinatown. The two walk into each other, and together they make the natural base for a first visit: one hotel or one station, two neighbourhoods, most of the headline programme on foot.

Beyond the core, the festival spreads to other creative districts across the city, and the record's venue line says exactly that: creative districts across Bangkok, centred on Charoenkrung and Talat Noi. Which other districts carry programmes in 2027, and which venues host what, belongs to the full programme, which the agency publishes closer to the festival. At the time of writing, the open call for programme and venue partners had only recently closed, so any complete venue map for 2027 that you meet this far ahead is ahead of the organiser. Plan the districts, not the rooms, and fix the days when the programme lands.

A first timer's way through it

Start with one anchor exhibition in the morning, while the lanes are quiet, then let the district do the rest of the work. In Charoenkrung and Talat Noi the distance between venues is part of the pleasure, and a plan of four or five stops with long gaps beats a list of fifteen. Leave the evenings for the outdoor programmes, talks and markets, when the heat has dropped. Wear for walking in a warm city, carry water, and use the river where you can: the core districts sit on the Chao Phraya, and boats and the skytrain and metro stations at the edges of the districts are the easy way in and out without a car.

Two calendar facts inside the festival reward attention. The first weekend contains Makha Bucha Day, Sunday 21 February 2027, with a substitution holiday on Monday 22 February, so the districts will carry a long weekend crowd of local visitors as well as festival goers. That Sunday is also one of Thailand's five Buddhist holy days with alcohol sales restrictions, which changes the evening economy of bar streets for a day, and its temple evening, candlelit wien tien processions in temples across the city, is the finest counterpoint the festival month offers to a week of design. The second fact is simpler: February in Bangkok is late cool season, warm and dry, which is why the festival can live outdoors. It is also peak visitor season, so riverside rooms near the core districts are the ones to book first.

The same February: Biennale closing and the Gems fair

Design Week does not have February to itself, and the overlap is a gift if you plan for it. The Bangkok Art Biennale 2026 (Angels and Mara) runs from 29 October 2026 to Sunday 28 February 2027, so its closing weeks are Design Week's weeks, and it closes on the festival's final day. The Biennale's venues include Wat Pho, Wat Arun and Wat Prayoon, Museum Siam, One Bangkok and the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, a river and old town route that pairs naturally with days in Charoenkrung and Talat Noi: temples holding contemporary art in the morning, design districts in the afternoon, all within a short stretch of the same bank of the river.

The third event in the same stretch is a different kind of visit. The 75th Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair runs Tuesday 23 to Saturday 27 February 2027 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, organised jointly by the Department of International Trade Promotion and the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand. It is one of the world's major trade sourcing events for gems and jewellery, spanning the full supply chain, and its character is trade rather than public festival. It matters to a Design Week trip in two ways: jewellery and gem design are part of the same creative economy the festival celebrates, and a large trade fair at the convention centre is one more claim on the city's hotels that week. General visitors should check the fair's access terms before adding it to a plan, since trade fairs set their own entry rules. Together the three events make the back half of February 2027 the densest creative fortnight in Bangkok's year, which is exactly why it rewards early rooms and loose days. Browse the wider season in arts and expos.
