River Kwai Bridge Week: Kanchanaburi's nights of light and sound
Kanchanaburi's festival of remembrance returns to the River Kwai Bridge in late November 2026, with a nightly light and sound show and a Red Cross fair. The 2026 dates, 25 November to 5 December, are expected rather than confirmed. How to plan a festival that has not published its final programme yet.
The short answer, with a warning: River Kwai Bridge Week is Kanchanaburi's annual festival of remembrance at the River Kwai Bridge, built around a nightly light and sound show retelling the wartime building of the Thailand to Burma railway. For 2026, TAGTHAi, the national tourism platform, gives Wednesday 25 November to Saturday 5 December 2026, but the province has not published a final 2026 programme and our calendar record is marked tentative. Plan around those dates, hold flexible bookings, and expect the final programme to confirm the details. Our calendar record is River Kwai Bridge Week 2026.
Why the dates need care
You will find two date ranges for 2026 if you search. One set of listings gives 27 November to 7 December: those are the dates of the 2025 edition, carried forward by sites that have not updated. TAGTHAi's festival page gives 25 November to 5 December 2026 and, when we checked again on 29 October 2026, still noted that the detailed 2026 event information is to be released. That is why this article, like our calendar, calls the 2026 dates expected rather than confirmed. The festival's pattern is not in doubt, a run of nights from late November into early December at the bridge; the exact 2026 nights wait on Kanchanaburi Province.
What happens
The centrepiece is a free light and sound performance at the bridge, usually at 19:00, retelling the construction of the railway by Allied prisoners of war and Asian labourers under Japanese occupation in 1942 and 1943, and the wartime bombing of the bridge, with fireworks on some nights. Alongside it run the Thai Red Cross fair, historical exhibitions, cultural performances and pageants, on the bridge grounds and the land beside the Provincial Administrative Organization. The town is about two to three hours from Bangkok by road or rail, close enough for a long day and better as an overnight.
The week deserves a sober hour in daylight as well as the show at night. Kanchanaburi's war cemeteries and railway museums sit in and around the town, and the bridge itself is a working railway bridge you can walk across between trains. The festival is a fair as much as a memorial, and holding both facts at once is the right way to attend it.
Planning a tentative festival
Book the bed, keep it flexible. The closing weekend includes Saturday 5 December, Thailand's National Day and Father's Day holiday, which is when domestic visitors peak. Riverside stays near the bridge are the convenient base. Book early, on terms you can move if the province shifts the run by a few days.
Aim for two nights. One night for the show and the fair, one day for the museums, the cemeteries and the river. If the final programme moves, two nights give you slack that a single night does not.
Fill the spare day at Erawan. Erawan Falls, the tiered waterfall in Erawan National Park, is Kanchanaburi's classic day out and pairs with the bridge in a single full day tour. If you are based in Bangkok instead, a Kanchanaburi historical day tour covers the bridge and the town's sights with the driving done for you. Both are bookable here:

Stays across the province are on the hotels page, and the rest of the season is in our guide to Loy Krathong and Yi Peng 2026, which falls on 24 November, the night before this festival's expected opening.

Checked 27 and 29 October 2026. Dates in this article are expected, not confirmed, and the province's final 2026 programme takes precedence when it appears.
