Things to do in Chiang Mai.

The old walled city, the mountain temple above it, and the valleys beyond: elephants, waterfalls and the highest peak in the country.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

The golden temple on the mountain above the city, up 306 naga steps, with Chiang Mai spread out below. Every Chiang Mai trip makes this pilgrimage once.

How to book: Songthaews leave from the old city and the zoo through the day; entry paid at the temple. Go early or at dusk to miss the midday groups.

The Old City temples

Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang inside the moat: Lanna architecture, the city pillar, and monks who run English conversation sessions for visitors in the afternoons.

How to book: Walkable circuit inside the moat. Small entry at some temples; dress as for any working temple.

Doi Inthanon National Park

Thailand's highest peak (2,565 metres), twin royal chedis, cloud forest trails and waterfalls on the drive up. A full day from Chiang Mai, and a cool one even in the hot season.

How to book: Day trips run daily; independent trips need a car. Park entry paid at the gate.

An ethical elephant sanctuary day

The Mae Sa and Mae Taeng valleys hold Thailand's best-known sanctuaries: feeding, walking alongside and river bathing with elephants, at no-riding programmes that put the animals first.

How to book: Book direct with the sanctuary or on the platforms, and choose a named no-riding programme. Pick-up from Chiang Mai is usually included.

Sunday Walking Street

Ratchadamnoen Road closes to traffic on Sunday evenings and fills with the north's crafts, food and buskers, from Tha Phae Gate to Wat Phra Singh.

How to book: Free. Sunday from about 16:00 until late; arrive before dark for the best of the stalls.

Planning the stay itself: the city guides cover what is on, and the hotels page covers where to sleep near it.
