Things to do in Koh Samui.

The Gulf's resort island: the marine park day trip is the headline, with the ring road of beaches and temples filling the rest.

Ang Thong Marine Park

Forty-two islands of lagoons, viewpoints and empty beaches west of Samui: the Emerald Lagoon climb and a kayak paddle are the standard day.

How to book: Tours run daily in season; park fees paid on top. The sea can be rough in November and December.

Big Buddha at Wat Phra Yai

The 12 metre golden Buddha on its little island off Bang Rak, Samui's landmark, with a market street at its base.

How to book: Free entry. Sunset is the photogenic hour.

Fisherman's Village, Bophut

The island's best evening street: wooden shophouses turned restaurants and bars on a walkable beachfront, with a night market on Fridays.

How to book: Free to wander. Friday market from late afternoon.

Na Muang Waterfalls

Two cascades in the island's green interior, with swimming pools at the first fall: the standard inland half day.

How to book: Small entry and parking fees. Best after rain; slippery in the wettest weeks.

Planning the stay itself: the city guides cover what is on, and the hotels page covers where to sleep near it.
