Things to do in Sukhothai.
The first Thai capital: lotus ponds, graceful Buddhas and the most peaceful ruins in the country, best by bicycle.
Sukhothai Historical Park
Wat Mahathat and the central zone's chedis reflected in their ponds: dawn and dusk are the hours, and the park is big enough to need the bike.
How to book: Entry per zone at the gates; bicycle rental everywhere around the park entrance.
Wat Si Chum
The great seated Buddha whose hand visitors photograph against their own, in a small hall north of the central zone.
How to book: Included in the north zone entry. Go early for the hall to yourself.
Si Satchanalai Historical Park
Sukhothai's sister city up the Yom river: wilder, quieter, and for many the better park.
How to book: Entry at the gate. A day trip from Sukhothai town, about an hour.
Planning the stay itself: the city guides cover what is on, and the hotels page covers where to sleep near it.
